In previous years, Virginia Heroes Incorporated offered mentoring to selected sixth grade students at a number of Richmond middle schools.
In 2005-2006, as a pilot, the program provided mentoring to every sixth grade student at one school, Chandler Middle School in Richmond's Northside.
In 2006-2007, we expanded our mentoring to include the entire seventh grade at Chandler. We introduced a new curriculum specially designed for the program by RPS Guidance Counselor Alease Johnson and RPS Vice Principal Janet Hall-Lane.
In 2007-2008, we plan to offer mentoring with a specially designed curriculum to all Chandler eighth graders. The students in this group will be the first to go through three years of Virginia Heroes mentoring.
We are making the changes to reach the entire school community and positively influence the students' lives in keeping with Arthur Ashe's profoundly inclusive vision.
