September 2009 – Virginia Heroes founding board member and longtime mentor Dr. LaVerne Spurlock (left in photo) wins the prestigious Richmond History Makers award for service to Richmond youth.

August 2009 – Virginia Heroes wins a second First Book grant to provide new books to over 450 students throughout the 2009-2010 school year.

 




Other recent awards and honors:

August 2008 - Virginia Heroes wins a First Book grant to provide six new books to each student we mentor. Over 2,000 books were given out and incorporated into the mentoring sessions. Spanish-language books were included.

August 2008 - Virginia Heroes is honored by the Richmond School Board with a proclamation praising our 18 years of service to city middle school students. Click to view Certificate of Appreciation.

July 2008 - Philip Morris employees vote for Virginia Heroes by awarding us a grant to support a tracking and evaluation program. The Philip Morris Employee Community Fund is a workplace-giving program managed, administered and supported by employees of Altria Group, Inc., Altria Client Services Inc. and Philip Morris USA Inc.

December 2007 - Virginia Heroes wins a grant from the Memorial Foundation for Children to fund a part-time assistant to the program director.

September 2007 - Virginia Heroes Program Director Joyce C. Johnson wins a 2007 Wallace Stettinius Award for non-profit leadership.

June 2007 - Virginia Heroes wins a grant from the George J. and Effie L. Seay Foundation and the Eppa Hunton, Jr. and Payne Hunton Foundations to fund creation of an eighth grade mentoring curriculum.

January 2007 - Virginia Heroes is named 2006 Mentoring Program of the Year by the Virginia Mentoring Partnership. Read Richmond Times-Dispatch article.
